🏉 Andrew Johns
Andrew Johns began as a Cessnock junior before making his Newcastle Knights debut in 1993. The halfback became central to the club’s premiership victories in 1997 and 2001, captaining the latter side and receiving the Clive Churchill Medal in that grand final. Representative careers with New South Wales and Australia followed the same ability to organise play, exploit space and turn a small opportunity into a scoring chance. His 2012 recognition as a rugby league Immortal acknowledged that influence. The Hunter connection spans childhood football and years of professional work, with Cessnock and Newcastle retaining their distinct roles.
🥊 Les Darcy
Les Darcy grew up near Maitland and worked as a carter and blacksmith’s apprentice while beginning his boxing career. Early fights in Maitland and Newcastle brought attention before larger contests in Sydney. His short life ended in the United States in 1917, but his reputation as an exceptionally gifted fighter grew into a powerful sporting legend. The Hunter’s attachment rested on more than distant admiration: local audiences had watched the young worker develop in the ring. His story combines skill, family responsibilities and the difficulties of a career pursued during the First World War.
